after running community stuff for the past year, we’ve met / reached a lot of people — and one thing we’ve noticed is that people often seem to gravitate towards a certain kind of person at certain kinds of community events.
sometimes it’s shared interests, but sometimes it’s more like… you care about similar things. or you’re trying to build similar kinds of lives. or you think about the world in a similar way. or you want similar things from the people close to you.
like, we know two people who seem pretty different on paper — one studies computer science + quantum computing, the other works on government-to-public partnerships — but they can talk openly and evenly with each other, and seem to share an idea of what love is for: a partner as a kind of co-investigator, and a place of peace where you can reflect and come closer to who you are together.
we know another pair who ended up starting a company together after we introduced them. what they seemed to share wasn’t a job or hobby, but a kind of reverence for community life — a desire to serve other people, create places where strangers can find each other, and a genuine enjoyment of the company of strangers.
and then there are people who seem to find each other because they’re digging towards the same questions — even if they have completely different emotional registers, interests, or ways of expressing themselves.
so we tried to turn some of that into questions.
we look at stuff like values, interests, lifestyle, social energy, communication, what you want from relationships, what you think relationships are for, what you want your life to look like etc etc — and then look across the pool for people who seem compatible.
the matching logic should get better with time and obviously observable traits can only be imperfect proxies of the complexity of being a human...
BUT U KNOW WHAT... THIS IS FREE AND WE SHOULD TRY IT!
WE WANT TO PLAYTEST RELATIONSHIP ALCHEMY!!!!!
OTHERWISE WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE SUBSTANCE OF COMMUNITY? IT’S INTIMACY!
